About Dustin Pierson

President of Operations at Breakthrough Basketball

Dustin Pierson oversees Breakthrough Basketball’s camp and training operations, drawing on more than 13 years of experience with youth basketball programs. He helps parents understand how to choose an appropriate camp, recognize quality instruction, and decide whether their child is ready for the camp experience.

Since joining Breakthrough in January 2013, Dustin has helped the organization grow from a smaller regional camp operation into a nationwide program running more than 450 camps annually at over 100 facilities. His work spans coach recruiting and preparation, camp scheduling, facilities, program development, customer experience, and camp evaluation. He has also helped launch ongoing basketball academies.

Dustin joined as a Camp Support Specialist, became Director of Operations in 2015, and moved into his current role in 2018.

Improving the camp experience

Dustin’s camp expertise comes primarily from overseeing and supporting programs. He personally attends a handful of camps in a typical year, while his operational responsibilities have involved thousands of camps since 2013.

He recruits and evaluates lead coaches, helps establish staffing needs, and works on coach onboarding and preparation. He reviews post-camp surveys, written reviews, customer concerns, coach recaps, and observations to identify what is working and where programs need improvement.

That feedback informs decisions about curriculum, schedules, age ranges, camp length, facilities, and staffing. For example, Dustin helped review and refine Breakthrough’s Attack & Counter camp by simplifying the curriculum, clarifying key teaching points, and improving lead-coach preparation.

He also considers the practical details that affect a child’s experience: enough baskets and gym space, appropriate group sizes, and coaches who can provide useful feedback while keeping players active and engaged.

Coaching young players

Dustin currently coaches third-grade boys club basketball for the Clippers in Tiffin, Iowa. He has also run small-group basketball training for boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade.

His teaching emphasizes fundamentals, decision-making, spacing, and moving without the ball. With his third-grade team, he uses a five-out structure—spreading players around the perimeter—with simple actions such as passing and cutting or dribble handoffs. Small-sided games give players opportunities to make decisions against defenders and learn when to use the skills they practice.

Alongside basketball skills, Dustin emphasizes listening, consistent effort, a positive attitude, being a good teammate, and responding constructively when things do not go as planned.

Helping parents make informed decisions

Dustin contributes practical guidance on camp readiness, choosing camps and trainers, age-appropriate instruction, coach quality, and helping beginners feel comfortable learning. His perspective combines direct work with young players and years of reviewing feedback from families across the country.

He believes a worthwhile camp experience depends on more than the curriculum. Parents are trusting a program with several days of their child’s time. The coaching, organization, amount of activity, and whether a child feels encouraged to return all matter.

Basketball background and education

Dustin played competitive travel and AAU basketball from fifth through eighth grade and played two years of high school basketball. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Studies and a concentration in Business.
