7 Minute Weak Hand Basketball Training Routine

By Jeff Huber

If I had $1 for every time I wrote a scouting report that said, “Can’t go left,” I’d be a wealthy man.

Unfortunately, over the past 20 years, I’ve coached a lot of players with the same issue. Players who limited themselves with their inability to drive and finish with both hands.

Think about it - there are 3 scoring options that you have when you catch the ball:

  • Shoot

  • Drive right

  • Drive left

If you can’t or won’t go to your weak hand, you’ve already made yourself 33% easier to guard. If you’re not a great outside shooter, now the defense only has to guard 1 thing. Even mediocre defenders can do that.

That said, I’ve learned that it’s not a lack of awareness that prevents players from improving their weak hand. Almost every player with that issue has been told they need to develop that part of their game.

So, if they know the problem, why don’t they do something about it? I suspect there are 2 reasons:

  • A narrow comfort zone - many players can get away with only going to their strong hand when they are young. By the time it catches up to them, those habits are so deeply ingrained that they are harder to break.

  • They overestimate the amount of time they need to devote to their weak hand - it would be great if you spent an hour a day on your weak hand. If you are that committed, that’s incredible. However, you don’t need to spend 60 (or even 30) minutes a day on your weak hand. 7 minutes a day is enough to make great strides. . .

The Quick Routine That Doubles Your Driving & Finishing Options

Can you find 7 minutes a day to work on your weak hand? Of course you can.

Whether it’s right before or after practice, or in your driveway at home, 7 minutes is more than doable.

Commit to this routine 3-4x a week and watch your weak hand get strong!

Ballhandling (3 minutes):

  • 100 pounds - high and hard

  • 100 in and outs - roll your hand over the ball

  • 100 v’s (back and forth in front of your body)

Finishing

Do all these off a self toss and rip (toss the ball out to yourself, catch it on your right side, and rip through to your left, taking 1 dribble and finishing)

  • 5 weak hand 1 foot layups

  • 5 weak hand power layups

  • 5 weak hand reverse layups

  • 5 weak hand inside hand layups (left hand on the right side, for instance)

That’s it!

The Power Of Compound Interest

Think of doing this routine as making a small deposit in your bank account. One small deposit isn’t going to make you wealthy. However, if you make 3-4 small deposits a week, that starts to add up.

Over time, you find that you’ve built a nice little nest egg.

The same principle applies here. You won’t lose your weak hand in a week. But if you do this for a couple months, you’ll suddenly realize that you don’t have a weak hand anymore.

And when that happens, you become that much harder to guard!
