Kansas Handoff Double Ball Screen

Are you looking for a new play that features backdoor cuts, dribble handoffs, double picks, dribble penetration, stagger screens, and three-point shots? If so, then you have come to the right place. You may be thinking that one play that includes all of that is too difficult for my team to run. That’s the best part! The following play is effective and easy to execute.

Step 1:

The play begins with the ball in the hands of your #1. The 2 man and 3 man are split out beyond the three-point line to the right and left, respectively. Your 4 begins at the free-throw line and your 5 sets up on the left low block.

Step 2:

The 1 man sets the play in motion by taking one or two dribbles to the left. While this takes place, your 4 sets a high screen just below the three-point line. Your 1 changes direction and uses the pick to cut back to the right. He dribbles at the 2 who fakes high and cuts back door. If the back door pass is there, your 1 should make the pass, leading the 2 to a lay-up.

Step 3:

If the backdoor cut is not available, the 1 man should continue dribbling toward the 2. At the same time, your 5 man makes his way up the lane to the left elbow. The 1 meets the 2 at the three-point line and runs a dribble hand off.

Step 4:

Once the 1 hands off to the 2, the 1 continues down the lane to the right low block. At the same time, the 3 man works his way away from the ball down to the corner. The 4 and the 5 drift toward the 2 and set stagger screens. The 2 man waits for the 1 to clear out and the double screens to be set.

Step 5:

Once the 1 has moved away from the ball, the 2 man uses the double stagger screen. He/she should turn the corner hard after the second screen and look for their shot by penetrating to the basket. If there is no driving lane, the next look is for the 3 man who has spotted up in the left corner.

Step 6:

If neither the penetration, nor the pass to the 3 are available, the two keeps his/her dribble on outside the three-point line. The 4 and 5 then set another double stagger screen, this time trying to free up the 1 for a shot. The 1 man curls off the screens and cuts to the three-point line looking for a pass from the two.

Is this play vs a man to man defense?

Yes this would be vs man. You could run it against a zone to get some motion going and some penetration. The screens would have to be set against the top of the zone and you would want your 5 to roll after setting the first or second screen. Plenty of variations you could run off of this depending on your personnel.

Dave, I have footage of the play on Hudl. I also have some on youtube(on a private link). The play works brilliantly and there are lots of options out of it.
