How the Cleveland Cavaliers Use Isolations to Their Advantage

by Kevin Germany

In general, isolations are to be avoided in basketball because they often result in inefficient outcomes such as forced shots and turnovers.

However, the Cleveland Cavaliers have used isolations to their advantage: LeBron James and Kyrie Irving - two of their most explosive playmakers - are routinely put in isolations to give the Cavs a significant advantage.

Here is how these isolations are implemented with great success.

Initial Setup

1 brings the ball up the court. 2 and 3 are on the wings.

4 is running the baseline. 5 is at the high post.

Play Sequence

1 makes the pass to 3 on the left block. 3 tries to post up as close as possible to the basket.

Note: 3 should be your team's best 1 on 1 player.

It is important for the other four players to move to the line of sight of 3, so the pass can be made more efficiently.

Most likely, either 2 will be open in the weakside corner or 1 will be open off a screen from 5.
