Multiple Option Ball Screen/Stagger Play
A common problem with ball screens is that the other 3 players end up standing around. This allows the defense to load up towards the ball screen, neutralizing its effectiveness.
If you’re looking for a play that combines a ball screen with hard to guard off the ball action that not only occupies the defense but also creates a legit scoring option, check out this play from Coach Don Kelbick (diagrams below)!

Ball Screen & Stagger

The play starts in a 1-4 high formation.
1 enters the ball to 2 on the left wing.
5 sets a back screen for 1. If 1 is open, 2 should pass to them.
4 & 3 move into position to screen for 1 on the right side.

5 follows their back screen with a ball screen for 2.
2 attacks the middle.
5 rolls.
1 comes off a stagger screen from 4 & 3.

3 spaces to the weak side corner.
4 holds the opposite block.
Coaching Tips:
2 can look to rip opposite and attack the open baseline area on the initial catch.
5 must sprint from the back screen to the ball screen to create separation from their defender.
2 should read 1’s defender as they use the ball screen. If x1 stay to help on 5’s roll, 1 should be open off the stagger. If not, 5 should be open at the rim.
4 & 3 should set their stagger screens outside the paint to allow room for 5’s roll.
