Square Up at the Rim Drill
Ages: All Ages Youth Middle School High School+
Purpose of the Drill:
To teach offensive players how to finish at the rim when they have a defender in front of them. This drill teaches players how to use their body to "push" the defender off balance in order to get a quality shot.
Instructions

- Start with the offensive player just in front of the jump ball circle below the foul line with the ball, back to the defender.
- The defender then establishes a good defensive position in front of the basket.
- The coach says "Go!" and the offensive player pivots toward the rim, then turns his body in under the defender and knocks him off balance.
- The offensive player may take one dribble to either side, goes up strong, or pump fakes to force the defender to "guess" when to jump.
- Coach can also move the offensive player around to other places within five to six feet of rim.
Points of Emphasis:
- Teach offensive players to become aggressive inside with the ball. Players too often try to get away from defenders in close and throw up quick, bad, off balanced shots.
- Teach the players to be patient, strong and tough.
- Offensive player should create the contact.
- Show players how to pick a good angle around the side of the defender. If the defensive player jumps hard to that side to cut them off, show them how to drop step the other way before they pick the up the ball.
- The shot should be finished by turning into the defender from underneath and straighten up. By dropping down, squaring up to the rim and straightening up, you push the defender off balance and now can shoot or pump fake.
- Teach the players to go right at the defender and be the aggressors in the play.
