Just your thoughts on what is happening in my grandsons high school basketball team. The coach has told them that they can's shoot the ball unless they have the green light. In order to get the green light they have to shoot 3-3 pointers get their own rebound and shot a lay up and do this for 5 minutes. They have to get 55 points in that time and each shot is worth 1 point. Last year they had many kids pass up wide open shots and only had a couple of kids that had the green light. At no time did they work on shot form or shooting and only about five minutes on free throw shooting and their % stunk. They could shot if they had an open lay up. But I saw kids with no confidence to even shot the ball.
If you reply I will not use your name to try and change this practice

Thanks-I find all your videos very helpful but at 76 years old I might not coach again (just grade school) but I still have the desire. We'll see.

I know some coaches use this tactic (or something very similar) and have a ton of success. And others who use it and have very little success. I personally do not handle things like that, but I get it.

I have said many times.. "it's not what you do, it's how you do things as a coach". I do agree confidence it VERY important. But so is shot selection. So I understand what the coach is trying to do.

I really don't have a problem with requiring players to pass tests to get the green light, even thought it's not something I would do. If your grandson doesn't like it, get in the gym and get better. With enough practice, he will be able to make 55 shots and get the green light (which is an awesome feeling to have). I always tell kids.... Don't worry about things you can't control (the coach), focus on the things you can control (your effort, how much you practice, and your attitude).

I personally spend time working on shooting in practice, but there's only so much you can do. If kids don't work on their shooting outside of practice, we're just not going to be good at all. So yes getting more reps in practice would be nice, but it ultimately it's each players responsibility to work on and develop their skills... especially at the varsity level... some coaches just don't spend time on skill work, it's all tactical.

I don't know if it helps but those are my honest thoughts when I read what is happening.

Well, here is my problem with that. The forwards and centers are shooting from the three point line and lay ups to get their required amount of points for the green line and they very seldom get the green line. He never works on shooting form and practicing any shooting. I watched games this year and saw the forwards and center pass up good 8-10 etc foot shoots. Why would they need to make 3's in order to get the green light. sorry, but doesn't make sense to me. Also they only get about 5 mins to practice their free throw shooting with no coaching. I see the ones that don't have the green light having NO confidence in their game.

Thanks again
