I typically have 90 minute practices, so I set up my practices like this. This isn't the same every practice, but very similar.

10 minutes - Lesson of the Day & Athletic Development (Speed and Agility, Coordination, First Step Speed, Strength, Balance, Jumping, lateral quickness, etc.)

25 minutes - Skill Development

25 minutes - Small-Sided Games (Offense & Defense)

5 to 10 minutes - Special situations (Breaking pressure, out of bounds play, sideline play)

20 to 25 minutes - Scrimmage

Hi Joe,

Great posts! I think it is extremely important to plan practices especially with limited practice time. I only get two 90 minutes practices a week with my 7th Grade girls club team. Since we run a 5 Out Motion offense and M2M defense we incorporate a lot of Offense/Defense into drills. So if we run a screen/roll drill we eventually run against a defense so we work the offense plus our defense against screens at the same time. I also try to run drills that put girls in game-like situations and that stress motion offense principles.

Planning your practices is a very important part of coaching.... these are well thought out Joe.

I would just add one thing since we cant cover every fundamental here...... after every game we always wrote down things that we didn't handle well..... they became part of the next few practices... handling multiple screens, pick and rolls, back screens etc. (these are just examples of what I am talking about)

The last thing I wanted was for us to make the same mistake AGAIN. I took all of this very personally... to me, when my players made mistakes on basic things, I felt that it was my fault and I was NOT about to let that happen AGAIN.
