Has anyone attempted or put together a set of HIIT movements to assist getting athletes in shape? For those not aware, it's High Intensity Interval Training and typically is composed of basic movements, with little or basic weights, done at a very high intensity followed by a short break in a repetitive mode. I've been personally doing this style of training for many years but never considered to add it as an conditioning aspect to our program. Allot of bball conditioning is already HIIT in nature, this would essentially place further focus on the time on/off pattern. Thoughts on early or seasonal use?

Personally, like you alluded to, I prefer to condition players on the basketball floor.

Then, I use necessary tools and exercises to make the players more athletic.

If you decide to do HIIT for training, I would recommend to remove jumping due to the amount of jumping that is performed in basketball. Or if you include jumping, do box jumps where the player jumps on top of a box and doesn't have to deal with impact of landing each time.

Personally, I use HIIT to stay in shape. I haven't found anything better. I use it for both sprinting and weights.

What about early in season, when legs/feet and calves are still getting used to the jumping aspects of the game? Would you still remove the jumping aspects?

Hard to say. Every situation is different.

Are they currently playing other sports? How much basketball are they currently playing? Do they play much outside of practice?

Ultimately, I won't know.

And I'm not an athletic development expert. I know enough to be dangerous. So I would definitely look for other resources and contact experts as well.
