Hi. Hope all is well. I coach at Jones High School in Orlando, FL. I coach girls’ basketball, and have been involved in the community for the past two seasons. In the summers I coach with an elite travel basketball team that tries to offer exposure to serious players that want to make it to the next level. Over the years I have meet some great coaches while traveling around the southeast. Then when I come back home and talk to my coaching buddies from Orlando, FL they seem to be missing the point that what we do is for the kids. They also seem to not understand that what may work for another coach may not work for you. I read and write a lot, and I also follow a lot of blogs on the game of basketball.
I recently had this thought to put together a coach’s clinic for the coaches in my area. I don’t want it to put be thrown together. I want it to be thought out and planned the right way. I’ve only attended a couple, but anything will get me started as I want to put it together some time in the spring of 2013. What do I need to get started on first?

Coach -

I'm retired now but when I was coaching I loved to listen to coaches like Johnny Wooden, Bobby Knight and Hubie Brown to name a few....... they were funny and usually game you some very good information.

After awhile a coach in our area put toether a clinic that involved the high school coaches in the area, that seemed to work out very well. Each coach was asked to bring their favorite drill or play. Some of the local high school coaches were presenters with some high school kids there so the coaches could see the drill or play live.

Find out what the coaches in your area want to know... have them send you some ideas and then you have to get some coaches that are willing to share something from their programs to help other coaches... and maybe some youth coaches too.

You are so right.... what team A can do, team B might not even come close.... it all depends on talent and the basketball IQ of the players involved. So, while you Elite team can do some things your high school team might not be able to do it the same way.

Just some of my ideas... hope this helps.
