Megan,

There are a lot of IFs here..... a lot of this has to do with what level you are coaching at and what state you are in and the area also. I will try to answer this from my perspective... in the Chicagoland area in Illinois.

I wanted to coach at the high school level so I needed a college education - BA, I already was coaching 6-8th grade kids for some time so I had some experience... it really helps to know someone to help you get that coaching job... but you need to have a teaching certificate... in some areas you can coach if you have taken the coaching accreditation course.

The calmer you are the better off you will be, especially in this day and age.... keep your emotions under control. As far as physical shape??? Not sure what you mean by that.

Experience -- this depends on the level you want to coach... some youth coaches have little or no experience.... if you want to be a varsity coach that is going to take a great deal of experience UNLESS you get lucky and end up in the right place at the right time... it does happen.

Pay, again... this is all about what level and where you are coaching... youth gets nothing... the further up the ladder you go the more you make..... the more experience you have, the more you make as you move up the ladder. When I started coaching 6-8th graders I made $200 a month (after 6 years, the first 6 were freebies)

I started at the high school level around $1,150 a season... ended up as a head coach at $6,000... now the head coach is making around $10,000... Big time college coaches make big bucks.

The amount of time you put in is strictly up to you ..... I can tell you that the head coaches in my area worked all year round... maybe some time off at the end of the summer. Head coaches do a lot more than just coach... they make schedules, order equipment and uniforms, schedule practices and gym space for all levels. It sure isn't a 2-3 hours extra day during the season as some might think. We scout our opponents, go to coaching clinics, meet with our staff and we are the liason between the basketball program and the rest of the staff in the school.

I for one never started coaching for money.. it was for the love of the game and the love of working with kids.. watching them grow from being kids to young responsible men and women.
