I should have added this ...... IF your FT shooter makes the shot, your sub goes in... IF he DOESN'T.... you can bring that player back. Good luck.

It all makes perfect sense coach!

After we score on a field goal, can we call a time out before the ball is inbounded by the opposing team? My confusion is who technically (if either team) has possession of the ball at that moment?

Thank you

As long as the other team hasn't inbounded the ball.... YOU or one of your players can call a time out.

Thank you Coach Sar! You are an incredible resource for a coach who is not afraid to ask questions no matter how obvious the answer may seem. :)

Coach B -

Thanks for the kind words.... I am glad to answer any question that you have ( or any other coach / players ) I enjoygiving back to the game that I loved to coach . While I have a lot of experience, I don't always have the answers. Sometimes I will do some searching on the net or ask some friends of mine that are still coaching for help.

I only wish that there was something out there like this site when I was coaching.

So, ask away any time that you are not sure about something. I remember WAY BACK when I first started coaching.... I learned a lot by talking to other coaches, watching games, and going to clinics when I found out about them. After 13 years of coaching 6-8th graders I moved on to the high school level. My first year was an eye opener, I had so much to learn about continuity type offenses. I had a good handle on m2m defense and game strategies.... but that first year I learned a lot.

Good luck and hope to hear from you again.

Hi Coach Sar,

When is a team allowed to sub a player(s) in 1 and 1 single bonus free throw situation?

Thank you

I goofed here...... I was thinking of a made free throw.... it has to be a dead ball situation for you to sub... but, you can call a time out to stop the clock and get your sub in. I'm glad you asked another question which gave me a a chance to read that over again and clarify that. Makes me feel stupid LOL I'm surprised no one else caught that...

Now, on to the next blunder.... :-) If you are shooting a 1 & 1, you can sub before the first free throw because there is no guarantee that you will make it. If you are shooting two shots the refs would wait until after the first attempt.

I did my subbing so that I could stop the play, get a sub in and set up our defense or press. We waited until the Ref handed my shooter the ball for the second shot and then sent him up to the table. If he missed, we brought him back.

Okay, I'm about to turn this into a "who's on first" bit, but I'm not sure which of your posts on this thread you are correcting? After reading the thread again, it still makes sense to me!? :)

I don't know what I was reading this morning... maybe too early without any coffee.

I guess this is the one I was looking at and read it wrong... I apologize again. Hope I didn't confuse you... ( I Must have confused myself. :-)
