Coaching a 3 on 3 competitive team of 12/13 yr olds. We start by passing to a wing, then setting an offball screen for the opposite wing. What usually happens is either the opposite wing doesn't wait long enough for the screen or the wing with the ball takes off. We actually tell the kids to yell "Wait! Wait! Wait" when setting a screen. Other than that, we've gone over pick and rolls and basically told the kids they can pass and cut or set screens.

We've worked on setting picks and off balls screens in practice. Game starts and well, you know the drill. Everything looks good on paper. We decided not to get wrapped up in running plays, rather told the kids to look for a screen or an opportunity to screen. Trying to keep it simple for them and give them something with a purpose to do on the court.

Am I on the right path here?

Keep it simple.... and yes, kids have a way of forgetting things they learn in practice... happens at higher levels too.

As for the kids not waiting for the screener.... do you have them making a V cut to set up their man before they make the cut and use the screener?

assume you mean the offball wing? No. So that player would cut low then back up to the screen? Maybe part of our problem is the initial screen. the person setting the screen actually goes all the way to the defenders of the wing. technically they just need to go close to the offball wing, set the screen. then the wing after they've done V cut should use them as the screen correct?

Its kind of a timing thing.... we wanted our screener to make a little contact, like stopping right next to them... not at their back, IF you do it at their back you have to give them one step to avoid contact...

So.... point makes the pass and goes to set the screen, the player receiving the pass makes a V cut and comes off the shoulder ( touching slightly ) of the screener...

IF the defender "chases" the player, that player will make a curl cut to the basket... if the defender goes ball side... that player would fade to the sideline..... now that might be a little advanced for your kids right now, so just utilize the screen and come to the ball..... but, you sure can teach your players IF the defender chases to curl to the basket... thats a lay up.
