Hi guys,

I have a question about the Mikan drill. Is it supposed to be a hook shot drill or just a drill to shoot the ball with either hand? I have seen a video clip and the participant was doing the drill shooting the ball like a normal shot? This way looks like it would be easy to block as the shooter is presenting the ball to a defender by squaring up to the ring?

Regards,
Trevor

We used it as a way to teach proper footwork and using the correct hand... a layup type shot... don't see any reason why you couldn't use a hook shot also, its still teaching the proper footwork and correct hand. JMO

In addition to Coach Sar's remark, it is also a lesson in physics.

The drill takes you side to side, away from the basket in each case. I use the drill to teach getting your drive knee to go toward the basket so you do not drift away from the rim when you jump.

Hi
Thanks for your reply, I have taught the drill with the hook shot in preference to squaring up shot, more to make it harder to block. Agree it is also a good footwork drill.
