Hello everyone
Ok , I have 3 good 9 year plays who are kinda good on defense, but I feel when they come up again a player that now how to jab step or give a good across, my 3 player would get beat easy. There lower body movement is stiff. How can I get them to move there feet , active feet. I was told to get them to duck walk with the ball or while dribbling it. Can I get some help with this please. Also I if I can get them to make a player not let a player go to there strong side. a drill to teach them on defense how to force that good right handed kid who always go right, to go left

Coach - This is an important skill that I believe should be worked on in every single practice and arguably most of your drills. It's just something that takes time, emphasis, and sometimes creative problem solving. But in the end, consistent emphasis is most important thing.

We use all kinds of different drills, tactics, and tools to get players defending the ball at a high level.

Here are a few drills ideas to get a foundation established

Here's a simple drill to establish good habits with close outs. We usually do this drill for about 2 minutes every day and then quickly move on to shell drill or other small sided games.

We use lots of 1v1 drills and shell drill to teach defense. I think full court 1v1 is one of the best things you can do to develop foot speed, quickness, athleticism, and defense. However we sometimes mix it up with different 1v1 close out drills.

Lastly, teach them to watch the defenders chest and STAY down in their stance. Defense is all about effort and balance. Emphasizing those things will help avoid getting beat by fakes and jabs.

Hope this helps.
