Hi, is there any organized offense that you would recommend at this age? We are playing in a league, and i feel like i have to have some form of organization. May be we don't need to? Just have different players bring the ball up and do some give and go's, set screens? Any advice would help.
Thanks,
Eric

At this age it has to be very simple..... pass and cut.... fill open spots... and have FUN.

I agree with Coach Sar. Keep it SIMPLE!! That is such a young age. Your goal as coach should be not to worry about set plays and winning.
Your objective exclusively is basketball basics, fundamentals and make it as much fun as possible!! And those objectives should be reinforced at every practice.

As Coach Sar said, teach moving w/o ball, pass and cut and floor spacing and good passing.
They have plenty of time in the years to come to learn complex plays.

The youngest group I coached was 3rd and 4th grade, both boys and girls (8 and 9 years old). I had one very simple play vs zone, one very simple play vs M2M and one out of bounds play. That's all I needed at that age. I still spent 80% of my practice time running drills and skills that reinforce basic fundamentals of proper shooting form, proper passing, dribbling, pivoting, rebounding , defenses, conditioning, fun hoop games, and explaining the rules of basketball.

Good Luck and Have Fun!!

At that age, I would create 6 spots around the permiter. Two guards up top, two wings, and two low/corners. I'd fill 5 spots with kids and have them work on pass, cut and fill the spots. You can call their names out to tell them who should cut first to mix it up a little. Tough age for this sport. Good luck.
