I used 5 out cutters with my 6th grade boys last season and plan to do the same with 6th grade girls this year. Our rules were to pass and basket cut or pass and screen away with all cuts being curl cuts. Eventually the boys decided weather to cut or screen away. As 7th graders I am considering 4 out 1 in to get more post presence and maybe incorporate some back screens. I'm curious Jeff, what are your motion rules for you freshman.?

Each year I coach the motion, the simpler it gets. The one year where I added more rules and tried to take more control, I thought our offense was less effective.

This year my rules / emphasis are....

- Keep spacing
- Ball movement (both east/west and north/south)
- Take care of the ball
- Get in offensive rebounding position on every shot
- Take good shots you can make
- Keep spacing

I listed spacing twice because that is our main emphasis. And ball movement is second because then I want to get the ball moving... going side to side, getting inside, coming back out, etc... via dribble and pass.

I will emphasize spacing and ball movement constantly. Regarding how they accomplish ball movement, that is mostly up to them. If that is a priority, they will have to MOVE. They will have to screen. They will have to cut. They will have to open windows. They will have to keep spacing. And so on. Otherwise the ball gets stuck and nobody is open. So they figure it out pretty quickly.

If needed I will provide guidelines and maybe add a rule. But whether its via back screen, basket cut, post up, flash cut, drive and kick, hand off, etc.... I don't care. I will show them options so they can start recognizing situations where they can set back screens, away screens, etc. But for the most part I want them to figure it out on their own as the play in the half court.
