Hi, I was wondering if a player is allowed to take two steps after they pick up the ball. Does it have to be a continuous motion? For example, a player dribbles down the court and picks up the ball. In order to get around a defender they take one or two steps with the ball and then shoot.

It's all about the pivot foot. Once they establish a pivot foot, they can pick that foot up, but the foot can't touch the floor again unless they pass or shoot before it touches the floor.

How do they establish the pivot foot? Can they take one step and shoot? According to FIBA rules.

Common rules on establishing a pivot foot (there are other scenarios, but these are the most common):

1)If a player catches a pass with both feet on the ground, once they lift one foot off the ground, the other foot becomes the pivot foot.

2)If they are in the air receiving a pass, the first foot to touch the floor after catching the pass is the pivot foot.

3)if they catch a pass in the air and both feet hit the floor at the same time, see the first rule.

4)When beginning a dribble, the pivot foot cannot leave the ground until the ball is released from the player's hand.

When you ask if they can take one step and shoot, yes. If they lift their pivot foot while taking that one step, the pivot foot cannot return to the ground until they've release the ball. It's all about the pivot foot. See the clip below:
