Add Progressive Dribble Knockout To Your Youth Practices
This is a great drill that can accommodate a lot of players, eliminate standing around, and groups your players by ability.
I use progressive dribble knockout during my youth practices and as a fun camp game as well. The game is simple to set up and players love the competitive nature the game brings.
The main difference to progressive dribble knockout to regular dribble knockout is that we have eliminated the part where you go and sit out on the side when you get out. When a player gets out in progressive dribble knockout they move to a different designated area to play instead of sitting out on the side.
Instructions for Dribble Knockout:
To set up this game, divide the court into three designated areas:
- high school (inside the 3 point line)
- college (inside the 4 cones in the middle)
- pros (inside the lane)
Notice the high school section is bigger and the pros is the smallest, the higher level the players get the less space they have to play, making it more difficult. All players start in the high school section of the drill.
On the whistle, players will start and try to knockout other player's basketball or cause another player to pick up or lose their dribble. If a player causes another player to lose their dribble, stop dribbling or lose their ball completely then they move up to the next section (ex:high school to college or college to pros). The player that loses their basketball or their dribble moves down a section (ex:college to high school). If a player gets someone out when they are in the pros section they just stay in the pros. If a player is in the high school section and they get out they go off the court and do a designated number of pushups to get back in.
I usually play for a designated time span of 3-5 minutes.
What I really like about this game is that it ability groups your players without the players knowing. Your best players will be going against each other in the pros most of the time and the weaker or beginning players will be going against each other in the high school section.
Variations
Require players to dribble with weak hand only.
Require higher level players to dribble two basketballs while playing.
