Shot Clock Situations - Chuck It Up or Take the Violation?

Recently, Coach John Carrier posted this survey question on Twitter.

One second left on the shot clock mid game & you have no good shot. Do you want the player with the ball to:

A. Chuck it up because a shot is a shot

B. Take the violation so we can set our defense

Of the 194 votes...

69.6% went with A - chuck it up.

30.4% went with B - take the violation.

Personally, I had more questions than answers...

Do you have a couple of players who are skilled with circus shots? They're playmakers.

How good is your offensive rebounding? If you have really good offensive rebounders, a shot is as good as a pass at times.

How good is your transition defense? If you have disciplined players that are great at shutting down the opposition in transition, you can take more risks.

How good is your opponent's transition offense? Some opponents will have such a great transition offense that it's better to throw the ball out of bounds, so they don't have a transition opportunity off a low-percentage shot.

How good is your opponent's defensive rebounding? They might have great defense that makes it difficult to get high percentage shots, but their defensive rebounding is their weak link. That's the best way for you to generate points.

What's the score? Down by 15 in the 3rd quarter... you might take a few more risks. Up by 10 late in the 3rd quarter, you might take fewer risks.

Would your approach change if it were a playoff game?

What's your philosophy on risk? Do you like to take more risks and let it play out over the season? Do you like to take a more conservative approach over the long run? Do you like to analyze each situation?

For me, after thinking about it a little more...

Eh, forget it all... I'm chucking it up! :)

By the way, John Carrier borrowed the question from Nate Sanderson who many of you are familiar with as well! Both are great coaching follows on Twitter at @JohnCarrier42 and @CoachNSanderson.
