Good things come to those who wait…or coaches who have some patience!

Nate Steege, creator of The Zoom Offense Conceptual Basketball, has won 2 state championships.

His 2023-2024 team

• Finished 2nd at state (a 1 point loss)
• Had a 22-5 record 
• Averaged 73 points per game

Coming into this season, Coach Steege had a lot to replace. His team lost 5 of it’s top 6 players and 51 points per game.

Early on, it showed. They started the year 2-3, averaging 53 points per game.

Since then, they’ve gone 16-2, and have won 11 straight games. Over that span, they are averaging 72 points per game.

What can we take from this? I think there are 3 main lessons:

• Teaching conceptual offense takes time & patience!

From Confusion To Chemistry: Why Patience Matters 

Conceptual offense is a popular term in the basketball coaching community right now. As the name implies, these are offenses that are based around concepts rather than hard and fast rules.

For example, the zoom offense utilizes both 2 & 3 players actions to create advantages.

However, it’s not a pattern offense. Instead, it’s read based. The offense will do different things based on whether the defense:

• Denies
• Sags
• Switches
• Traps

Learning and executing these reads takes time. It may not be pretty early in the year. . . but if you stick with it, the rewards can be tremendous!

Too many coaches don’t persist through the growing pains. As a result, they never get to experience the benefits of a conceptual offense:

• Creating high IQ players who make basketball reads

• Creating offensive scoring advantages

• An offense that’s nearly impossible to scout

With the season having recently ended, now is a great time to deep dive on the The Zoom Offense With Nate Steege.

Use the time you are allotted in the spring, summer, and fall to start teaching the concepts, reads, and drills of the system.

By doing so, you’ll put your team in a position to hit the ground running next season - and to run away from your competition!
