Sideline Out of Bounds - Lob

The following sideline out of bounds play features a lot of motion, but is used to create space on the court to run a lob for your wing player. This play creates highlight reel finishes at the rim for advanced players.

Step 1:

The play begins with 3 taking the ball out of bounds. 5 starts on the left low block. 2 starts on the right low block. 4 starts on the left elbow and 1 starts on the right elbow.

Step 2:

4 screens across the key to 1 who cuts toward the ball.

5 and 2 remain in place until 1 has the ball.

3 in bounds the ball to 1 and then steps in to the left wing.

Step 3:

4 sets a screen for 1 who uses the pick and dribbles to the right side.

At the same time, 2 sets a screen for 5 who goes low and continues until he is outside the key.

Step 4:

1 dribbles to the right looking like he is planning on making a pass to 5 in the short corner.

4 stays at the top of the key, looking to draw his man away from the basket.

Once 2 has screened for 5, he continues up and sets a back pick for 3. 3 catches his man off guard, away from the ball, and cuts to the basket.

The key should be open, thus creating an over the top lob pass from 1 to 3.

This fun play creates highlight reel dunks and can be used to send your home crowd into a frenzy and get the game's momentum on your side.

What if you don''''t have anyone on your team that can dunk?

You can do a few different things:

1. Just throw a lob and shoot the lay up.

2. Throw the lob and let the player catch it in the air, come back down, then power up to shoot a lay up.

3. Don't run the play because you don't have the athletes to make it work.

Hazem - you could set a rule whereby if 1 comes off the screen but can't get open, then
a) 4 could pop out high towards the halfcourt line as a safety and/or
b) instead of screening away, 5 comes close and takes the inbound.

If you have 4 come high, 1 can then curl round him for a handoff and the play can continue as planned.

1 needs to do a better job or reading the defense.... RUB you defender off of 4, shoulder to shoulder- if he over plays you, back door or make a curl cut around 4. If that doesn;t get you open, you need to work harder on your skills.

Great player movement and floor balance. We ran something similar to tthis with mulitiple screens and had some success. Catch them by surprise and you will get some easy shots regardless of the you making them or not.
