7 Best Youth Basketball Dribbling Drills

By Jeff Huber

In this video, you are going to learn 7 of the best drills to teach elite ball handling and dribbling to youth players. These drills are designed to help youth and middle school players master the most important skill in youth basketball - dribbling!

If you watch a youth basketball game, it doesn’t take long to see that it’s the kids who can handle the ball who dominate the game. However, most coaches are unsure how to best teach players to dribble confidently and competently. Let this video show you the way!

These drills come from renowned coaches and trainers, and have been used with countless players over the years. They use a variety of methods to teach dribbling - 1 ball, 2 balls, stationary, on the move, on-air, and against a defender.

Each drill is meant to combat some of the common elements of dribbling that players need to be effective with the ball:

  • Controlling the ball while dribbling with force
  • Being able to make change of direction moves quickly and with eyes up
  • Being able to speed dribble and cover ground without traveling or carrying the ball
  • Being able to handle the ball in a random manner by reacting to another player
  • Handling the ball with strength when in traffic
  • Using the moves learned in drills to beat a defender in a 1v1 situation
  • The ability to handle the ball with their weak hand against pressure

These drills will show your players how to handle the ball effectively in various aspects of offensive play - when stationary, on the move in space, and when being closely guarded.

These 7 drills teach you how to train your players to:

  • Manipulate the ball with one hand to create space
  • Use 3 different change of direction moves quickly and effectively
  • Bust out of traffic with an effective speed dribble that maximizes how fast you get down the floor
  • Handle 2 balls while reacting to a stimuli (similar to a defender) that determines how you will dribble
  • Dribble 2 balls with force to cover ground quickly and to be able to be strong in traffic
  • Use the moves and tactics learned in the unopposed drills to beat a defender in a 1v1 situation
  • How to use their non-dominant hand to handle the ball against full court pressure

Beyond the setup of the drills, you’ll see the master teaching that is necessary to teach elite dribbling. You’ll hear numerous coaching tips that make the difference in players retaining what they are being taught.

No coach has ever had too many good ball handlers. At the youth level, most teams are lucky to have 1 good dribbler. By implementing these drills, that won’t be the case for your team.

Instead, you’ll end up with players who can confidently handle the rock to navigate any situation they encounter!
