Man to Man Basketball Play - Cross

Here is a great play that includes multiple options to attack the basket and really put pressure on the defense. It includes a backdoor cut, a dribble hand off, ball picks, and the options for drive-and-kicks.

Instructions

  1. The play starts with:

1 at the top of the key with the ball.
    2 on the right wing
    3 on the left wing.
    4 on the left block.
    5 on the right block.

  2. To initiate the play, 2 and 3 cross. As soon as 2 and 3 cross, 4 and 5 cut to the high post.

  1. 1 passes to 4 or 5.

  2. 1st Option - After the pass, 3 cuts backdoor. (Note: It's important that the wing takes a couple of steps high before the cut. This will create better timing and a better passing angle by bringing the defense higher.)
  1. 2nd Option - If the backdoor cut is not open, 3 continues to the opposite corner. Next, 1 will cut to the free throw line, then cut off of 5 for the dribble handoff.

If 5 sees his defender cheating to cover the hand off, 5 could fake the hand off, then attack the basket.

  1. 3rd Option - If the 2nd option is not there, 1 spaces out to the corner and 4 sets a ball screen for 5.
  1. 4th Option - If the ball cannot be passed to the high post initially, 1 enters the ball to the wing.
  1. After the pass, 1 cuts to the corner. 5 screens 4, and 4 immediately sets a ball screen for 3. (Note: The screen between 4 and 5 makes it more difficult to cover the ball screen.)

3 looks to score. 4 can roll or pop.

I like the multiple options in the play But for the pass to the wing, I think it wud be better for the 1 guard to ball screen and when the 3 guard curls, the 5 man to set the second screen. Meanwhile the 4 man shud screen the 3 guard and the 2 guard shud look for the 3 guard and if
He isnt there then take it to the whole. :)

I use both the back door and wing screen / roll in separate plays. This is a good way to combine the 2. I use the backdoor play 2 or 3 times per game - so it's not a set I would run too often. Key timing point on the backdoor. The point must hit the post on the way to the ball and the wing has to be high and wide ( above FT line and beyond 3 pt line) and straight line cut at the moment the pass goes to the post..it's a bang bang play and works..as simple as it is. I coach mostly middle school level. Must use a post that can pass...some can't :)

Two thoughts. There is no need to have the 2 and 3 cross. If u r playing against a pressure team u r just allowing them to trap the point guard on the "cross". Have the two guards start at the elbow of foul line then pop out.

Further option. When the first cutter goes through and the second handoff to the point guard isn''t there....why not set a stagger screen for the first cutter. So in your example the 4 and 2 would set a stagger screen for the 3.

Great points and options, coaches.

Coach John, I've never had a team trap us up top when running the play. Our point guard tends to be about 25 feet from the basket when running the play and I think that makes the play more difficult to trap. But if a team does attempt to trap the play, that is a great adjustment. During the 2nd half of the season, we eliminated the "cross" of the guards to throw off coaches on their scouting reports.

I really like your 2nd option. I've actually used that as a play as well.

Against my better judgment, I tried to implement it as one of my few plays for a 7th grade team that I was coaching and it was a nightmare, because somebody would always forget what to do.

I like it. The corss is a different look of a 1-4 offense. I like to have the PG UCLA cut after passing to the wing. Rather than just cut to the corner. A lot of times, that give and go is there. Thanks!

if they're able to, the 3 can also post on the strong side if the backdoor cut is negated (no help defense available). if 5's defender sags to help, jump shot for the 5. if the 4 sags, jumper for the 4. if the 2 defender replaces 4, 2 fades to the corner.
in the 4th option, 2 can rub off 4 and replace 1 behind the three point line. if he's open, jumper. if timed appropriately, 5 can also spin-seal and receive the pass from 2. if the defense switches, 5 still has the opportunity to receive the ball in the paint. 4 can even fake the screen, spin, and cut to the basket.

Our team scored twice from the same player who cut from the right wing with the motion offense in play (at the right wing). The passer actually was a bit chubby but somehow quick enough to fake move and cut (give and go lay-up) from the right wing, receiving a reverse pass from a teammate (doing the motion o) on the line, 2 steps quicker than his defender. He did it twice. The defense was scattered due to the motion offense.
