If you coach long enough, you’ll run into the 1-3-1 zone that completely stalls your offense. Passes get tipped, the ball doesn’t break the arc, and suddenly your players are playing hesitantly instead of attacking.

That’s why it helps to have one quick-hitting play you can call at any point in the game — something simple to teach, easy for players to remember, and designed to produce what every coach wants against a zone: an immediate layup look.

Here’s a go-to quick hitter from The Complete Zone Offense Blueprint with Ryan Schultz, you can install fast and use the next time a 1-3-1 tries to speed you up.

Canes: Quick Hitting Play to Score vs a 1-3-1 Zone

• The play begins with the offense in a 1-2-2 alignment.

• 1 starts with the ball and begins the play by passing to 2 on the wing.

• 1 cuts through to the right corner.

• The goal is for 1 to draw x1 out towards the corner. To achieve this, 1 should call for the ball, and 2 should pass fake to 1. 

• 4 & 5 come up and back screen x3 & x5.

• 3 cuts behind the screens to the basket.

• The timing of the screens is crucial. The screens should occur simultaneously to x1 moving towards the corner.

• 2 passes to 3 for the layup. If x1 doens’t go all the way out, 3 can cut to the opposite block and receive a skip pass.
