Basketball Shooting Drill Video - Quick Shot

This is 1 of the 12 shooting drills that we gave to anybody who purchased our Breakthrough Basketball Shooting Guide as an unadvertised bonus.

Don Kelbick was kind enough to supply us with these videos.

This drill is great for developing a quick shooting release. It provides a game-like situation that forces you to shoot quickly.

Instructions:
  1. Player starts with ball underneath the basket. In this video, the shooter is at the top of the key.

You can adjsut the distances and angles that you shoot from.

  2. The player underneath the basket passes the ball to the shooter, then rushes out to challenge the shooter's shot.

  3. The shooter gets the rebound and goes to the end of the passer's line underneath the hoop. The passer goes to the end of the shooter's line.

If you have just two players at a hoop, they just switch back and forth. Shooter becomes passer. Passer becomes shooter.
DO NOT BUMP INTO SHOOTER! I sprained my ankle very badly when a kid ran into me while just shooting around.

I like aspects of this drill but wouldn't it be better to have the defense challenge the shot and box out rather than run past the player?

What is the purpose of the drill? If your purpose was to improve rebounding and boxing out, then yes.

If your goal was to force the shooter to concentrate on releasing the ball quicker and to challenge the shooter, then no.

If you box out, it''s harder to challenge the shot compared to when you do a fly by.

I think this is a worthwhile drill but that there should also be an emphasis on the players not bringing the ball down before they shoot. Bringing the ball down is slowing down the shooting motion.

Shankar - We have documented everything you need to know about teaching a 14 year old to shoot a basketball in the guide below. It includes pictures, step by step details, workouts, drills, etc. I would love to answer your question but shooting is complex and I need many pages and pictures to explain an effective teaching process. This guide explains everything in detail:

I agree with Paudie here .... not dipping the ball is something that they could add to this drill. You notice in the first shot he got a bounce pass and went right into the shot.

Its a little harder to go right into your shot off a chest pass IF its NOT in the correct position to go into your shot. If the pass is too high, I think the player has to bring it down somewhat to set his rhythm. A good passer helps the shooter, bad passes can make good shooters look bad. JMO

We worked with some of our kids regarding getting a quicker release... that takes some time and a lot of practice. Catching the ball in your shooting pocket can help you a lot along with catching it in the triple threat position.

The idea of this drill is for a quick release and it looks to me that they are working on that...
Trust me, Don Kelbick pays attention to all the details.

Get higher realse points, follow through, fix the offhand and less rotation at the 3, really bad. Rolls at like it did in here scrubs.
