5 on 3 + 2 - Fast Break Drills
Here is a great game-like fast break drill that gives the offense opportunities to recognize what options are open as they execute the 5 on 3 break. If they advance the ball quickly enough, they can get the shot that they want before the defense fills in. If not, they transition to a game-like situation where they have to execute their offense in order to score.
Check out the video and diagrams below from Don Kelbick's Transition Offense and the Four-Second Fast Break.

- The offense starts by shooting the ball over the rim back and forth.
- The defense starts with 3 players back on defense. The other 2 defenders are on the sidelines at half court.
- When the coach calls "Go," the next offensive player grabs the ball off the backboard.

- The offense immediately transitions and attacks the other way.
- The offensive player should fill their spacing spots. In this example, players are getting into their flex spots.
- The 3 defenders back try to prevent the offense from scoring.
- The 4th and 5th defensive players are released when the ball crosses half court. They must sprint in and touch the half court circle before getting back on defense.

- If the offense cannot score in transition, they should immediately flow into their offense.
- The defense should attempt to get matched up and force the offense to score 5v5.
Coaching Tips:
- The offense should attempt to score without "running offense." They have a temporary 5v3 advantage. The goal should be to score before the defense can get set.
- To instill a sense of urgency, give your team a time limit to get to their spacing spots. You might tell them they have :04 to get to their spots or it's a turnover.
- The defense needs to communicate as they work to get back to neutral. The 3 defenders who are back should attempt to not give up a layup or open 3.
- The 2 defenders running in from half court must scan as they run in and see who still needs to be covered. Often, that may be players on the weak side of the floor.
- If you have 3 teams, you can play this drill continuously without having to reset.
