How My Former Coach Created A Basketball Dynasty - Winning 5 State Titles in 10 Years

Today, I want to share a story about a coach that I was an assistant for.

It's worth a brief moment of your time because I had the privilege of watching as he built a dynasty program... and I believe you can do the same thing.

However, you don't have to wait over 20 years as this coach did.

After implementing this strategy (it's not offense or defense), the coach went from zero state titles to...

  • 5 state titles in 10 years
  • 8 state championship game appearances in 10 years
  • Selected to coach the McDonald's All-American game
  • A plethora of coach of the year awards

You also might've seen this coach on TV when Loyola Chicago made that miracle Final 4 run a few years back as two of his former players were on the team... the offensive conference MVP Clayton Custer and the conference defensive MVP Ben Richardson!

These were two kids that he coached since the 3rd grade... along with his son Vince.

And that's actually where the story starts...

Back in 2010-11, I was an assistant coach for Ed Fritz.

In 2010, the team made a miracle run and reached the state championship game. Nobody expected them to be there!

In 2011, a bunch of those players returned and a group of freshmen came in that Ed Fritz had coached since 3rd grade.

As previously mentioned, one of those freshmen was Clayton Custer. He immediately impacted and became the starting point guard on that varsity team.

That year, they made a great run and finished 2nd at state again... losing to a loaded Wichita Heights team.

However, the JV team went undefeated and was led by many of the freshmen that Coach Fritz had developed since 3rd grade. The future was bright!

In 2012, they lost to Wichita Heights in the state championship game for a second time.

But after 3 straight state championship game appearances, they finally broke through!

In 2013 & 2014, they won back-to-back state championships and were buzzing around the top of the national rankings... led by the group of kids that he coached since 3rd grade.

After a two-year break, Coach Fritz's Blue Valley Northwest teams continued their rampage... they won 3 straight state championships in a row from 2017-2019!

And there could've been a 6th state title in 2020, but the tournament was canceled after they reached the semifinals. So they didn't get a chance to go for the four-peat.

When it was all said and done, he enjoyed winning 5 state titles in a 7-year period... With a total of 8 state title appearances in 10 years!

If that's not considered mind-blowing success, I don't know what is!

And he believes it was a direct result of those players working with him in their earlier years.

If you take a moment to think about it...this makes absolute sense!

He got all the youth teams in his program running the same system. Playing defense the right way. Playing offense the right way. Working on skills the right way.

During the early part of his unbelievable run, he saw the success of the team that he had been working with since 3rd grade. So he started the Husky Youth Basketball Program. His assistants and others coached the youth teams.

As a result, those athletes came to the later stage of his basketball program as much better players who had a great foundation of skills and basketball IQ.

Instead of needing to get acclimated with foundational concepts, he could work on more advanced concepts with them too.

That's why he saw the continued success over an 11-year period!
