5 Keys for Picking an AAU or Club Program

In the following video clip from the Huber Hoops Course, you will learn specific information for picking a club or AAU program.

Just because a team wins a lot of games, past college athletes played for that club, or the club is very popular... that DOES NOT make it a good team for you!

This information is geared towards high school teams. However, it's also great for youth parents and coaches to watch as well. Not only is it a great idea to be equipped with the information ahead of time, the tips are helpful if you want to start becoming familiar with specific programs. If possible, you might test out some of the programs prior to high school and play for them at the youth level. This will help you narrow your choices when you reach high school....

Why do aau teams give some kids free of pay? I think this is so unfair as we all struggle to pay 1500.00. Why is it so expensive ?

Cathy, since I have never run a club, I can’t speak of the financials. However, I’ve heard many clubs don’t make nearly as much money as it appears.

As for players playing for free, that’s because the team wants them to win and/or obtain funding from shoe companies. And certain players are recruited and play for free in order to accomplish these goals.

At least, that’s my understanding.

Except for Step 5 totally inadequate. Many kids have to go to school in a district - they have no choice and to transfer is nearly impossible without cheating. Private schools are too expensive. I was an assistance Varsity coach in a NYC small private with a fantastic head coach. He was a great teacher especially with the 'big man.' Our program was non-scholarship playing in a league where 90% of the reams were scholarship these were the teams that attracted the eyes of the elite college teams. Most often the coaches at these exclusive High schools were mediocre but with outstanding talent. High Schools coaches want and have to win. They will play the (in their estimation) the best 6/7 kids out of a squad of 15 (needed for practice). So much for playing time.

Just to clarification, this is for people seeking a spring/summer club team. This is not associated with the school season during the winter.

ALL AAU teams are dysfunctional to some degree, just a question of how much dysfunction can YOU tolerate as a parent.
