How My Daughter Bounced Back From Being Bounced Around

By Jeff Huber

My youngest daughter is in 4th grade. She is a good player with a high skill level. She's been fortunate to be in the gym a lot as a result of my coaching and tagging along with her older sister.

That said, she's also a peanut. At her most recent annual appointment, she measured in the 67th percentile for height and 7th percentile for weight.

While some people might like that profile, it's not always great for basketball. When she plays against bigger and stronger players, she tends to be bounced around.

When that happens, her skill doesn't show up as much.

I am not worried about this in the long run. At some point, she will mature physically and be better equipped to deal with physical play.

However, I also don't want her to get discouraged in the short run.

At 10, I'm clearly not going to put her on the bench and in the squat rack. But that doesn't mean we just have to wait for nature to run its course.

How We've Used Mini Workouts To Level The Playing Field

Over the past couple months, she and I have started doing some of the at-home workouts from the Youth Athletic Development Workout Program With Cody Roberts.

These workouts are perfect for her. Why?

  • They're quick - each workout takes 10-15 minutes.
  • They're age appropriate - she is learning how to build mobility, strength, & athleticism by using her body.
  • They're challenging & fun - the workouts progress, so as she develops, the workouts get harder. They continually challenge her in a motivating way.

We've been doing these workouts 2-3 times a week. Is she now built like Kelsey Plum? Not yet.

But she is getting stronger. Her balance is improving. She's able to move fluidly.

And because of that, she's more resilient on the court. She still gets banged around. But it doesn't have as much of an effect as it used to.

Perhaps the best part is, as a result of all that, she's more confident. She feels better about her ability to physically compete.

Give The Gift Of Athleticism & Confidence To Your Whole Team

After seeing how much she was benefitting from these workouts, I wanted to share that with her team.

We've started integrating some of these "Hallway Workouts" prior to practice.

As her team waits for the team ahead of them to finish practice, they go through one of these quick workouts.

It's a great way to prime themselves for practice while also developing their athleticism.

Athleticism - The "Skill" That Improves All Other Skills

Many players don't start training athleticism until middle or high school. Why wait? Start developing better athletes today.

If your players are better athletes, will they be better defenders? Harder to guard? Better rebounders? Better in transition?

The answer to all those is unequivocally yes! So what are you waiting for?
