Unless they have 45-inch verticals, smaller players have to be crafty players. In order to finish over the big boys, smaller players have to utilize their quickness to get to the basket first and get the ball high off the backboard, so the bigger players can not block it. Even for youth players, it's good thing to teach. It creates a softer touch and they'll know how to shoot around the basket when the size of the competition increases with age.
They also have to make good decisions, such as using a floater in the lane before the big man reaches them. They could also use a pump fake to get the big man in the air and draw the foul or use the step-through move to get a better shot, because we all know shot-blocking big men love to jump.
As for passing, a smaller player will want to use ball fakes to open passing lanes.
