Categories: Defense  Rebounding
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

The purpose of this drill is to teach defensive players to get in good defensive position while on the weakside, help on any penetration from the strongside, and box out players crashing from the weakside.

Instructions

  • The drill has five offensive players who start at the three point line and two defensive players.
  • The defensive players start by guarding a player.
  • The offensive players can exchange on the weakside, dribble penetrate, etc.
  • When the ball is passed to an offensive player, the defender gets in good defensive position, with the second defender in a deny position since the ball is one pass away.
  • If the offensive player with the ball makes a dribble move to the basket, defensive player 4 will help on the penetration by 5 and then recover to his own man on the pass.
  • On the skip pass from offensive player 4 to offensive player 2, the defensive players move into weakside defensive position by splitting the rim.
  • In this situation, offensive players 4 and 5 exchange on the weakside and the defensive players must exchange as well while still paying attention to the ball.
  • In this situation, offensive player 3 shoots the basketball and defensive players 5 and 4 must box out their man.
  • In this situation, offensive player 3 drives the ball to the basket.
  • Defensive player 5 must help outside of the lane.
  • Defensive player 4 must drop below the ball in order to see the full court.
  • If offensive player 3 skips the ball back to player 4, the defensive players would have to recover back to their man and prevent any shot or penetration.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Sprint to weakside help position.
  • Split the rim when in weakside help position.
  • Help on any dribble penetration from the strong side with both feet outside of the lane.
  • Sprint to help on the penetration.
  • When in the lane (weakside help position) be low enough to see your man and the ball.
  • Box out your man from the weakside help position.
  • The strong side offensive players can drive to the basket or shoot at any time so the defenders must be prepared to help of box out.
