Transition Jumpshots Off the Catch
Ages: High School+
Purpose of the Drill:
The purpose of this drill is to emulate game-like situations with players catching the ball on the run in transition. The goal is to teach solid footwork and offensive moves to score in the open court.
Instructions

- Players line up in two lines at half court with a coach in the middle of the floor near half court with a couple of basketballs.
- The first player in the first line sprints and receives the pass near the 3pt line, ball-rips to the bassline and pulls up for a jumpshot off one dribble.
- The player rebounds their own shot, runs to the outside, passses back to the coach and switches lines.

- After the initial player shoots, the first player in the opposite line also sprints down the sideline, receiving a pass on the wing.
- The players in this line catch the ball, ball-rip low to the middle once, and pull up for the jumpshot in or near the lane off one dribble.
- Similar to the first line, the shooter rebounds their shot, runs to the outside and passes the ball back to the coach.

- After everyone has gone through both lines, reverse the motions so that the first line now goes down the middle after the ball-rip.

- Now the second line ball-rips to the bassline.

- After everyone has gone through both lines on the previous motion, the players then pull up for 15-foot jumpshots on the catch (no dribble).

- After everyone has shot 15-footers, the lines move back and players shoot 3 point shots on the catch (no dribble).
Points of Emphasis:
- The drill is continuous and variations of the moves can be added.
- Coaches should emphasize catching under control and ball-ripping low, covering ground on the dribble
- Coaches should also emphasize sprinting to the spots to simulate a game-like transition opportunity.
Motivation/Teaching Tips:
- To motivate players, have a coach or manager keep score of how many makes each "team" gets.
- Points can be subtracted if players' footwork or ball-rips are done incorrectly.
- Points can also be deducted if players don't run at game speed.
