Escape 3 on 3 Half Court

Categories: Offense (Team)  Offensive Moves
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

To teach players how to dribble-drive hard under control, see the court, and making the right decisions. This drill should produce a good scoring opportunity created by the defense trying to scramble and cover for a beaten teammate.

Instructions

  • Place three offensive players anywhere on the half court.
  • For example, two could start beyond the three point line and one in the deep corner.
  • When the coach passes the ball to any of the three offensive players, the defender steps past the ball and then tries to recover.
  • The offensive player who catches the ball goes straight to the rim, reading both teammates and opponents.
  • His two offensive teammates need to read the ball handler and their defenders and move to a spot where they are in good scoring positions and can receive a pass.
  • The player with the ball needs to make a determination on which pass produces the best possible shot, or if the defenders do not provide help, the ball handler may go to the rim for a lay in.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Offensive players must act quickly and be smart with the ball.
  • The ball handler must be careful not to take too many dribbles because the defense will catch up.
  • The ball handle must be able to read two defenders and two offensive teammates.
  • Defense has to move quickly to help.
  • The object is to get the best shot available. Work with the offensive players to keep their spacing, see each other, move correctly, make crisp passes to the open man, and convert quickly. The defense has made a mistake so the offense needs to make them pay for that mistake.
