4 X 4 Foot Finish drill

Categories: Defense  Offensive Moves
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

To teach offensive players to attack defenders from different spots close to the rim. The drill also teaches defenders how to create off-balanced shots near the rim without fouling an offensive player.

Instructions

  • Start the offensive player four feet from the rim and put the defender four feet at a different angle.
  • On the command "GO", both players move toward the basket.
  • The offensive player makes an aggressive move right to the rim, while maintaining control all the way through the shot.
  • The defender attempts to beat the offensive player to the spot of the shot.
  • The defender seeks to create an off balanced shot using good defensive positioning without fouling.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Both players want to get the best position they can and use their physical presence to be the aggressor and keep their opponent off balance.
  • The offense wants a strong, solid, on balance shot and the defense wants to make the offensive player to shoot and off balanced, tough shot.
