Counter Block

Categories: Offense (Team)
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Summary:

This is a misdirection play that works against zone and man defense. All five offensive players know where the ball is going but the defense doesn't know almost until the ball gets there.

Personnel:

A post that wants the ball and wants to attak the rim.

Instructions

  • The play starts out with misdirection as the guard dribbles to a strong side with a post on the block.
  • The backside wing floats down towards the block and breaks to the pinch post on their side.
  • Upon catching the ball, the wing (22) turns in.
  • The offside post (45) pins the defender early (as soon as they see the guard start to pick the ball up on the dribble), as all five offensive players know this is a counter play.
  • The wing hits the post, right in front of the basket, who attacks the rim.
  • Wing (22) can use a dribble to get a better angle for the pass. However, if the post is ballside and posted, the wing just enters the ball.
  • Advantage - All five players know where the ball is going. The defense does not know it until the ball gets there.
  • Hint - make sure the point guard does not go too far to the right - just looks "busy" as it makes it too long a pass.
  • Play can work against man or zone.
