Purpose of the Drill:

Provides some work for the posts by getting the ball into the post and kicking out to an open shot.

Instructions

  • Start with your bigs at the block, two on each side.
  • One big on each side is posting up, calling for the ball.
  • Start wtih your guards with the ball at the foul line extended, just behind the three point line.
  • The drill starts when the guards pass the ball into the post.
  • The other two bigs are defending the post.
  • After receiving the ball in the post, the bigs pivot into the lane and complete a kick out pass to the opposite wing.
  • The bigs then criss cross and post up on the opposite side of the lane.
  • The guards recieve the kick out and hit the post, who has just flashed from the opposite side of the lane.
  • Upon receive the entry pass, the post makes a move to the basket and finishes the shot.
  • The two bigs who just made the post move, players 4 and 5, then sprint to half court.
  • The two defenders rebound the made or miss and kick out to the guards at the three point line for a shot.
  • The two bigs who are defending, player 3 and 6, grab the make or miss from the shooting guards.
  • The two bigs who have sprinted to half court, go around the circle and run back towards the basket, spotting up at the elbows.
  • The rebounders pass to the trailing bigs, who take a jump shot.
  • The the players will switch in the post, offense to defense, and the guards who switch out as well.

Points of Emphasis:

  • The guards should pretent they are being guarded so they can't just make a chest pass into the post. The need to make a wrap around pass, use pump fakes, and make quick, strong passes to the post.
  • Great drill for running bigs.
  • Really gets the bigs involved in the practice.
  • Post defense is playing behind the post and half speed but you have flexibility to increase the intensity.
  • If you want to make it harder, have your other set of guards defend the wing and make the entry pass more difficult.
  • Make sure the guards are receiving the ball in a shooting position with their knees bent and hands ready to receive the pass.
  • Make sure the posts on the kick out are hitting the shooting shoulder to make it easier to get a quick shot from the guards.
  • Emphasize to the bigs that they need to pivot on the inside foot.
  • Teach the bigs to chin the ball. Get the ball under the chine with elbows extended to be strongest.
