Raiders Face Guarding

Categories: Defense
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

This defensive drill uses a football instead of a basketball. It is designed to simulate full court pressure where the defender has his back turned to the ball being taken out of bounds and forces the pass to go over the top.

Instructions

  • Start with a payer or coach out of bounds with a football.
  • The second offensive player attempts to get open and come back to the ball to receive the pass.
  • At the 4 second mark, the second offensive player gives a hand signal or makes eye contact and runs a fly route down the court.
  • The offensive player with the ball passes the football deep.
  • The defender initially is face guarding and preventing the short pass.
  • When the offensive player releases, the defender attempts to bat down or intercept the deep pass.
  • Then, have the same drill with a basketball.
  • If the defender steals the ball, they can transition and attempt to score.
  • If the offensive player receives the ball, they will go one on one in an attempt to score.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Get in good defensive stance.
  • Yell "ball" when the pass is made.
