M-Drill

Purpose of the Drill:

The purpose of this drill is to work on changing directions with various movements, footwork and pivoting, and stopping and starting with the basketball.

Instructions

  • Place cones in the shape of an M as shown in the diagram.
  • Start at the baseline cone and sprint through the cones as indicated by the arrows.
  • The drill should also be completed in the opposite direction.
  • Any combination of movements can and should be used including sprints, slides, backpedal, etc. Be creative.
  • In this variation you can teach proper screening at each of the cones.
  • This time the drill will be done with a basketball and a jump stop and reverse pivot will be added.
  • Start at the baseline cone in a triple threat position.
  • Sprint dribble with the outside hand to the first cone and jump stop into triple threat position when you reach it.
  • Reverse pivot then speed dribble to the middle cone and jump stop into triple threat position again.
  • Repeat this process until all of the cones have been completed.
  • Be sure to run this drill in the opposite direction as well.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Planting with your outside foot and exploding off of it in the direction you are going.
  • Stay low in your plant and pivot.
  • Proper footwork on the jump stop and pivot.
  • Proper screening technique.
  • Handle the basketball with your outside hand.
