Better Shooting 2

To give you an objective review of the DVD, here are the strengths and weaknesses of the product:

Strengths

  1. They do a superb job demonstrating proper shooting mechanics and they make it really easy for the viewer to understand. This video really shines in production quality and presentation.

  2. You'll learn from two very credible authorities, a great shooter/player, and a great shooting coach. First, JJ Redick was perhaps the finest shooter in college basketball history from his Duke University days. And second, the lead instructor, Rick Torbett, had entire TEAMS shoot 40% from 3, so you know his techniques don't just work a few for gifted players, but for everyone.

  3. The video provides really good suggestions on how to BREAK BAD habits and shooting flaws. Let's face it, most players have some bad habits to break. Rick Torbett gives some really effective tips on how to quickly break those habits. He also demonstrates these common shooting flaws very effectively making it easy for anyone to identify and correct their flaws.

  4. The video angles and graphics nicely demonstrate proper shooting form and technique. They give you lots of helpful angles to really help you understand proper technique.

  5. They do a good job of demonstrating the shot line. This is a good concept for players to latch on to and run with.

  6. You'll get an in depth workout to improve your footwork. If you watch and apply all the footwork tips in the video, you have ALL areas of your shooting footwork covered.

  7. You'll get some awesome advice about developing shooting range. Rick makes some excellent points about how some women players have more range than men. It's not about brute strength, it's about technique. Rick points out this technique and shows you how to develop range without getting your shot block or sacrificing quickness.

  8. Women players will learn common shooting myths and better understand how they should think about shooting.

  9. You'll get some great shooting workouts. The workout provided on the DVD is excellent. You'll get some great step by step workouts to improve footwork, range, and accuracy.

  10. Players will really relate to the interviews from JJ Reddick and Shay Doran. Profiling real players that are successful really helps motivate and develop confidence of the viewer.

  11. The DVD truly does teach you how to build your shot step by step. They break everything down for you.

  12. Youth players will learn about the biggest mistakes they can make. And these suggestions are backed up by JJ Reddick and Shay Doron, which is what kids need to hear.

Weaknesses

Even though Better Shooting 2 is one of the finest shooting DVDs that we have ever seen, it still has a few flaws. Honestly, there is NO such thing as a perfect shooting DVD. Every video has at least some short comings. There weren't many on the Better Shooting 2 DVD, but here's what we found:

  1. It's long. Three hours of video is a lot to watch. Now don't get us wrong, it's nice to have lots of material but it can be slightly overwhelming. The good thing is that the video is organized into chapters. And the first two chapters, which are short and straight to the point, explain everything you need to know about shooting fundamentals. Everything after chapter 1 and 2 are details, explanations, or training methods. So if you only want the fundamentals, all you have to watch is the first two chapters, and then come back for all the advanced stuff later. With that said we still recommend that you watch the entire video at some point. When you do, we suggest that you watch the whole video from beginning to end in one hour chunks (one hour each day). Then go back and study the sections that are most critical to you.

  2. The beginning of the video makes some great points about the mental aspects of shooting. These points are certainly true and will help most players. However, we think it would have been more beneficial to provide some mental training techniques for players to practice on their own. Currently, it's up to the player to figure out how to get it done.

  3. There are some hotly debated issues on shooting, like squared stance vs staggered. Rick Torbett teaches the squared shooting stance. We understand why he teaches this but we believe the slightly open stance is more technically correct. Coach Torbett didn't wimp out, he tells you exactly what he believes on these issues and others. And although we don't agree with all of his ideas, he does back up his concepts with solid rationale, and it's hard to argue with his results. We recommend that you watch Rick's "reasons why" chapter in regards to the stance. After watching that section his true strategy will be clear to you and you won't want to skip that.

Summary

Bottom line, Better Shooting 2 is an excellent DVD that will help you become a better shooter. Both coaches and players will benefit and learn something new.

The production values are very good, with special effects that dramatize key aspects of the stages of a shot motion. Coach Torbett gives clear explanations to accompany the visual footage. For the most part, all the information is easy to follow and flows at a good pace.

We highly recommend the Better Shooting 2 DVD and believe it is much improved from the original Better Shooting DVD.
