Overload Defense Drill - 4 on 4 With Baseline Drivers

Drill Purpose:

This is another great defensive overload drill that reinforces great defensive principles such as: help & rotation, communication, and positioning. It works especially great, if you have trouble rotating against dribble penetration.

Instructions

  1. Have four offensive players spread around the court with four defensive players guarding these players.

Two baseline drivers will be in the corners. The baseline drivers can be managers, coaches, or players. The baseline players are stationary, except for when they have the ball.

  2. On the whistle, the four offensive players try to score and the defense tries to prevent them from scoring.
  1. If the baseline driver receives a pass, he can either hold the ball and pass it to the next open offensive player or dribble towards the hoop.

If a baseline driver gets the ball and just stands there, nobody needs to help.

If the baseline driver takes a dribble towards the basket, the defense needs to stop the ball, rotate, and communicate. At any time, the baseline driver can pass the ball. This is the only time the defense guards the baseline drivers.

  2. When the baseline driver passes the ball, the defensive players rotate back to guarding the four offensive players.
