I have such respect for coaches who have such a detailed understanding of the game yet can still teach kids and keep it fun. Well done coach, I coach u/16s and I have passionate coaches like you to thank for the skilled and enthusiastic players that I get the opportunity to work with. Keep up the good work!

Ben -

He is great with kids isn't he? I have found that younger the kids are, the more patience you need.

Unfortunately... most coaches start with young kid... and IF they don't have a mentor... they will be too demanding and have the WIN mentality.

I started with 6-8th graders and was a pretty demanding coach... I moved up to the HS level and finally the Varsity boys coach. Heck, you can be VERY demanding there.... but when I went down to help with the freshman or sophomores I found myself to be more understanding.

I retired and in my last year they needed a girls coach.. so I took the sophomores..... they told me, coach us just like you did the boys..... I started laughing and they wanted to know why... I told them that I would not treat them so hard.... I don't want you crying all the time... but I would teach you the same way. I enjoyed that year, had a lot of fun and so did they.

After many years of retirement, I helped a guy with his 7th grade team. This one kid came up to me and asked me why I never yelled at them. I told him, thats not my job, I am here to teach you the game. I want you guys to have fun.
