Basketball Workouts: The 1.16 Shooting & Ball Handling Formula
I don't say this lightly, but I believe if you take this advice that is supported with analytical evidence, it could be life-changing.
NBA skills trainer, Don Kelbick, once gave me this advice as a young coach.
And this can lead to...
As a coach, you win more games. This means you can get better jobs and provide more happiness for you and your family.
As a trainer, the players you train get A LOT better! Then you develop a waiting list for training players. This creates financial stability.
As a player, if you get good enough to earn a college scholarship, you enter your professional life with fewer college loans. This sets you up for financial success.
That's why I say life-changing!
It all comes down to this genius training advice from NBA skills trainer Don Kelbick.
"Focus on what happens the most. And focus on what works."
So when designing drills and workouts, always keep this at the front of your mind. It's simple, but it's not easy. It takes laser-like focus and discipline to keep doing this.
And I was lucky. I just copied what Don Kelbick told me to do and tweaked a few things based on my preferences.
So here's what you need to do!
Focus on what works... like high percentage shots!
Here are some stats from NBA.com for the 2018-19 season:
0 Dribbles - 1.16 Points Per Shot
1 Dribble - 1.02 Points Per Shot
2 Dribbles - 0.95 Points Per Shot
3-6 Dribbles - 0.94 Points Per Shot
7+ Dribbles - 0.93 Points Per Shot
I think it's pretty obvious that the fewer dribbles you take, the better your shooting percentage is going to be!
Focus on the things that happen the most!
Not only is shooting with zero dribbles the most effective shot, it also happens the most often... by a long shot!
0 Dribbles - 44.1% of shots
1 Dribble - 13.1% of shots
2 Dribbles - 12.1% of shots
3 Dribbles - 4.9% of shots *
4 Dribbles - 4.9% of shots *
5 Dribbles - 4.9% of shots *
6 Dribbles - 4.9% of shots *
Rest - 11.1% of shots
(* Note: For 3 to 6 dribbles, we couldn't get an exact percentage. The stats were lumped together in one category. The total came to 19.4%. Hence, the 4.9% (rounded) for each amount of dribbles.)
So if you have limited time and 70% of your shots come with two dribbles or less and they are the highest percentage shots, what do you think you should focus on!
And if you study the design of Don Kelbick's Attack & Counter Workout Program, that's exactly how they are set up. The focus is on shots off the catch, shots off of one dribble, and shots off of two dribbles.
Don't get me wrong. You still should do ball handling drills. You should still end your ball handling drills with shots. However, it shouldn't make up 50% to 75% of your time practicing your skills.
So don't feel like you have to do all of the crazy drills on YouTube to have success. In fact, do the opposite!
There are a few more aspects that make the design of these workouts genius which we will get to tomorrow.
But if you want to cut to the chase and do exactly what Don Kelbick recommends for individual skill workouts, here you go...
