Three Point Sideline Out Of Bounds Play

By Daniel Benjamin

Summary:

This is a great play to get a quick three-pointer off a sideline out of bounds play. This play also allows for secondary options, if the three is not available.

Instructions: (Play can be run on either side of the court.)

Step 1:

Player 3 will be the inbounder.

Player 1 will attempt to set up between the three-point line and mid-court line (ideal catching spot). If not, he can go back into the backcourt in order to relieve pressure.

Player 2 will set up around the left elbow.

Player 4 sets up around the right elbow.

Player 5 sets up on the left block.

Step 2:

Player 3 inbounds the ball to player 1.

As player 3 passes the ball to player 1, player 4 takes a few steps towards player 3 then takes a few steps towards the baseline -- in order to get in position to set a screen for player 3.

Player 5 also takes a few steps toward the right (he should be about at the basket line) and a couple of steps forward (off the baseline).

Player 2 can "hang out" around the elbow or set his man up for cut.

Step 3:

After player 3 inbounds the ball, he will run off the staggered screens set by player 4 and player 5.

Player 1 will dribble towards the left side, in order to get an angle to pass the ball to player 3 in the corner, for a three-point look.

Step 4:

If player 3 is not open in the corner, player 1 will use a change of a direction dribble. As soon as that occurs player 2 will run off a staggered double screen set by player 4 and player 5.

Player 1 will then dribble to the right and look for player 2, either in the corner or on the wing.

Step 5:

If player 2 is not open, player 1 will take a couple of dribbles to reset.

As player 1 is doing this, player 5 spaces out to the wing to create operating room.

Player 4 comes up to set a ball screen for player 1.

Step 6:

After setting ball screen, player 4 rolls to the basket.

Player 1, coming off the ball screen hard, has four options: layup, short jumper, hit player 4 rolling or player 2 in the corner for the kick-out if his defender helps.

Player 5 cuts to the top of the key to be the protector and gives player 1 an alternative if the other four options aren't available.

Additional Comments:

If need be, player 1 can start a little below player 4 and rub off him in order to get open. If player 1 and player 2 are interchangeable, they can screen for one another and change spots to get the ball in bounds.

I would prefer to have my 5 set the pick and my 4 flash to the 3pt line

I like the play but you are really counting on Player 1 getting open because their are no other options.
