A few weeks ago, a number of coaches replied and wanted more details about our youth summer camp that was extremely productive for us.
Here’s the practice plan and drills that I used for the first day of the team camp. I deviated and improvised at times — but for the most part we stuck to the plan about 80% of the time.

Practice Plan – Team Camp Day 1
Get players started on Pre-practice Routine –
Acknowledge & talk with each player during the routine
Team Huddle and Notes
- High fives & enthusiasm.
- Discuss core values (see notes below).
- Show players on iphone how to complete day for workout (a few players were not completing their “days”).
Defense (30 min)
- Whole – Review goals and use tape to show the house.
- Review on ball objectives. Constant pressure. GNAT. “Get off me” mentality.
- Star close out drill.
- 1 pass away drill (right and left wing)
- Post defense drill (right and left wing) – ¾ front. Dig out with double from help.
- Shell
- Offense doesn’t move.
- Pass and interchange (switch spots with the person next to you).
- Drive every time
- Interchange and drive
- Full court defense positioning – half speed shell.
Dribbling (20 min)
- Zig zag cross
- Zig zag behind back
- Dribble moves at cone – in/out, double cross, retreat, glide dribble, stop and go (change speeds).
- 1v1 advancement
Footwork and post moves (20 mn)
- Spin outs – Front pivot, step through
- Spin outs – Drop step, rev pivot
- Spin outs – Rev pivot, sweep
- Post 1v1 – pass, cut from top, seal, and score (immediacy)
Snack Break – Wash Hands When Done (15 min)
Offense
- Whole – Spots, spacing, ball movement, until great shot. Need to get open.
- Basket cut – 5 on 0 pass and cut.
- Screen away – shooting drill.
- Screen away – 5 on 0 pass and screen.
- Reading defense when one pass away – fill and read defense (back cut or pop)
- Reading defense when ball is dribbled at you – back cut or pop out/behind.
- Dribble at post spacing – lane line or short corner.
Transition Offense
– Sprint to 5 spots (fill corners first – anyone can be PG)
– Headman and basket cut (sprint).
– If can’t headman, dribble at a wing… they read the defense (back door if defense helps up or circle behind if defense sags). Weakside can screen away (keep spacing).
Scrimmage
