I’m a basketball coach, skill development trainer, and Co-Owner of Breakthrough Basketball. I currently live in Marion, Iowa with my wife, two kids, and our golden retriever (Izzy). Right now I am coaching two teams. I will be coaching... Read More...
Just started using them this year for my 6th grade Girls traveling team. I have limited the use to full court partner passing (sprinting or shuffling down court), full court weave with layup at one end, and a half court passing around perimeter with pass to cutter for a layup (drill). I am hesitant to use them for any type of ‘shooting’ drill. I will probably stick to passing and ball handling.
I think you are right to be hesitant about using the heavy ball for any shooting drill. With high school players the only time I’d use the heavy ball for a shooting would be the mikan drill (to develop strength) and maybe fast break passing type of drill where players finish some lay ups.
Most of the comments came through social media, so I’ll list the drills coaches suggested below…
– 5 ball passing
– partner passing
– 3 man weave
– laker passing drill
– star drill
– really any form of quick passing drill.
– 4 corner passing
– fast break passing
– mikan
– stationary dribbling
– middle man passing
– machine gun passing
– Also use it to run plays when they are dribbling/standing too much and need them to cut and move to the ball.
Couple more I forgot to add…
– two lines / short pass
– finger tip passes off the wall
– short dribbling
