Post subject:  Daughter can't quite reach the basket

Hey guys,
My daughter is 6 and can't quite reach the basket (8 foot) shooting the regular way. She can make a lot of shots shooting underhand. Should I let her keep shooting underhand while we also practice regular shooting form. She was discouraged at practice because she only made 1 shot. If she shot underhand she would make a lot every practice. I've coached middle school, high school and college but am not sure what to have her do. Don't want her to into bad habits but also want her to feel the feeling of making it and being successful.

What do you think?

When my daughter was 6 she played on a nerf hoop and with a light ball in the basement.

In 2nd grade we started a team... sort of... she invited 8 or 9 of her best friends to play basketball. We practiced for one hour once a week. We did not shoot at the basket... if we did it was rare. Practiced some form shooting away from basket. We ordered special 25.5" basketballs for all the players:

We played lots of dribbling, defense, pivoting, and passing games. Parents would say at the end I didn't realize kids could have so much fun playing basketball without every shooting.

In 3rd grade we started playing 3v3 with low hoops and small ball. At the end of the season I caved, for the sake of time, and played in a 5v5 tournament.

I think developing coordination and athletic foundation and fostering a love for sports is most important thing at this age.

My daughter is in 8th grade now, this is the first year she is mature enough where we actually get her consistent shooting reps. In past, the majority of practice has been on all the other aspects of the game. This is the first year she is actually strong enough to shoot with good form from 17 feet or so. As of this week I think she's finally ready for 3s. She has made a ton of progress this year. I just never felt she was ready and that spending much time practicing her shooting was a waste sice she'd just need to change her technique anyway.

Here's a basketball size chart to give you a rough guideline and some ideas:

Hope this helps.
