Post subject:  Strength training

My 15 year old will be playing high school basketball next year. She is tall but thin and needs to get stronger. Any recommendations on a strength program, such as exercises, frequency, etc. I don't want to overdo it. I know I should probably focus on lower body and core exercises. I just need some functional workouts that will help improve her strength. Thanks for any assistance.

Are there any local trainers or programs around to get into? Depending on where you live there are lots of people that do that. Individual training can be pricey but if she can get in a small group it's more fun and affordable. I find that working out with a group of peers is much more effective in regards to getting them in the gym to work out... especially with girls.

I just know the basics... squats, push ups, planks, side planks, and coordination. When it comes to real effective strength training I'm just not qualified enough. But anything related to basketball coaching I can usually help. That is why I suggest a trainer or local program. It doesn't need to be complicated... I think you're on the right track with functional strength training. Add in some balance and flexibility commonly need for bball players (hips, calves).

You can also find some good core exercises here:
