3v0 Back Screens

Teaching screening and motion offense -- back screens.  In this drill, we take a small piece of our offense and introduce back screens.
In this drill, we take a common situation that can occur in a game (ball at the top with a player in the post and on the wing). So we ask the players, if you're covered, what you can you do to get open in this situation?   In this case, we are teaching back screens.  The players should recognize that 3 could set a back screen for 2.
Frame 1
So we'll have 3 back screen for 2.
Frame 2
1 then passes to 3 so we can continue recognizing situations.
Frame 3
The ball is now on the wing and a player (2) is in the post area.   Players will now hopefully recognize another back screen opportunity.  2 sets a screen for 1.  1 cuts to the basket.
Frame 4
3 passes to 2 and we're back to the situations we started with (ball at top with a player in the wing and another player in the post area). The process repeats.
Frame 5
In this simple drill, we're keeping the ball on the perimeter and just learning to recognize situations and make good passes.   Emphasis
  • Make good passes that are accurate and crisp
  • Focus on good screening and cutting technique
  • After you set a screen, open up and look for the ball
  • Cut hard to the basket looking for the ball
Once players get the hang of it, you can progress to a passing and finishing drill by passing to the cutter and let them shoot a lay up.   You can also use this drill to teach other screens like down screens.   You just take a 3v0 situation and teach whatever offensive action you'd like from that formation.
