Post subject:  Shooting, snapping the wrist

Looking for help (thoughts) to the following.
11 year old female player.
She is having a difficult time with the "hand in the jar". Rather than a follow through that resembles reaching in the jar she some how twists her hand which has her thumb pointing back at her. Along with this her arm rather than going forward finishes above her head. Imagine her thumb pointing at the top of her head.

She is able to make shots but I would like to get this corrected sooner rather than later. She does a great job of getting the ball in shooting position but this follow through (or lack of) has gotta go.

Anyone have any drills to get that wrist to snap forward each and every time without the twisting of he palm?

I have attached a photo for a visual.

Thanks

My suggesstion would be for her to do a lot of FORM shooting..... Start by standing next to a wall ( this way she wont worry about making shots ) This is what I had my players do that had form problems. I have seen players with their wrist out but never in.

Stand by a wall..... 1- Take one dribble and bring the ball up to the shooting pocket ( keep the non shooting hand OFF the ball ) 2- Go into your shot and HOLD the follow through ( arm extended / hand in the cookie jar / wrist down. )

She has a bad habit that will take 100s / 1000s of shots to correct. Fortunately, she is young and it should be easier for her to break this habit.

I hope this helps.

This would be my next step -

"As I talk to a lot of players, they are looking to correct their shot, dribbling, passing etc. Mostly shooting..... there is no quick fix for this, you have probably been shooting that way for a long time and have created a bad habit and its in your muscle memory.

To correct this problem, it is going to take 100s, no, more like 1,000s of shots to create a new muscle memory - so the shot becomes automatic.

The first thing you have to do is correct your form... that can be done by shooting against a wall so you don't have to worry about making the shot... only using correct form - 100s of shots a day until you have correct form. Then you can go to the basket and do what we called BEEF check going from Block to the Middle to the other Block.

Step 1 - We started this with the SHOOTING HAND ONLY.... maybe 12 shots in all.
Step 2 - Then you can bring your guide hand up but NOT on the ball and do the same thing. 12 more shots.
Step 3 - - 12 more shots with your guide hand in the proper position. ( your guide hand has nothing to do with the shot other than to keep the ball in the proper position on your shooting hand.)

The next thing to do would be to step back several feet... 6-7 feet? Now repeat Step 3, don't move any further back until you have mastered this distance. Once you are shooting with a good percentage, you can move further back. Don't move to the three point line if you are shooting 30 percent from 10 - 15 feet."

Don Kelbick says that a good shooting percentage is around 46% and in game situations that is good... in practice, from short range, I would like to see it a little higher.

From the free throw line... depending on your age and ability level, 60 to 80 percent is what I had my kids try to achieve.

To explain BEEF for those who haven't heard that term.
B - Balance ( staggered stance, one foot slightly in front of the other )
E - Elbow under the ball ( the elbow might be SLIGHTLY out )
E - Eye on the target (keep your eye on the target until the ball goes in)
F - Follow through..... ( keep your arm extended until the ball goes in)
I hope this helps.

Muscle memory is a big factor, another one will be her ability to try something new. Good one you for trying to help her correct it now. I've found one of the toughest things to tweak is a player's shot, especially at the younger levels 11U-14U. They're used to making shots a certain way, it feels comfortable. Getting them out of their comfort zone is tough, especially when it makes them miss shots in the short term.

One goofy thing might be to have her lay on her back and shoot shots in the air. Kind of tough to bring your hand behind your head.

Thanks for the ideas, she is having a hard time wondering why I want her to change because she is somewhat successful. Trying to convince I don't care about shooting and scoring now. Lets get that form corrected so you can score in high school when it counts.

You are right coach.... its not about NOW..... its about when she is 14+.

Take a video of her shooting now and show her the follow through.... then look up some videos of proper form and show them to her.
